It was recently announced that the Emmy Awards will take place on a different date than what was initially planned for following the conclusion of the SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America strike. Now, on January 15, 2023, TV lovers will gather in Los Angeles to celebrate and honor the people who helped create the biggest shows of the year. Previously, the award show was set to take place on Monday, Sept. 18, but was postponed out of respect for the SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America strike. A host for the Emmys has yet to be announced.
The nominations were announced on July 12, two days before the start of the strike. Striking started on July 14 and lasted until September 27. Writers were striking due to unfair wages and the new advancements in artificial intelligence. Hollywood studios were not supplying workers with safeguards with the new advancements in AI. Now, the strike has ended with a new agreement that satisfies these organizations. This immediately brought back Late Night TV and caused the new date of the Emmy Awards. With award season back on track, fans can now catch up on the nominated TV shows and determine who will be getting their votes.
The five shows with the most nominations are HBO’s “Succession”, “The Last of Us”, and “White Lotus”, followed by Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” and Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”.
Personally, one of the biggest highlights out of this year’s selection of nominees was “Abbott Elementary”. It’s season two was everything fans could have hoped for. After sweeping the Emmys last year, everyone is curious to see if Quinta Brunson’s original show still has what it takes to charm the voters. The show sees nominations in multiple categories, some including Comedy Series, Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Quinta Brunson, and Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Tyler James Williams.
After the infamous “Succession” Sundays that every TV lover anticipated, “Succession” leads the nominees, and rightfully so. The show is one, if not the best, to air in this decade and it deserves its surplus of nominations. Every main actor in the series is seen having their own nominations. Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, and Jeremy Strong take up three of the six slots in the Lead Actor in a Drama Series category. Sarah Snook is nominated for the Lead Actress in a Drama Series category as well. The show also sees nominations for Best Drama Series and many others.
However, nothing in this award season stood out to me like “The Bear”. After fans, including myself, questioned the need for another season following an already perfect season one, all doubts were erased when season two was officially released. I mean, have you seen episode six? That episode itself deserves all the awards! Jeremy Allen White, the show’s lead, is nominated for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, an award he won previously at the Golden Globes in 2023 for the same role. The show also sees numerous other nominations such as best Comedy Series, Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for Jon Bernthal and Oliver Platt, and Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Ayo Edebiri.
Award season is back! Fans all around the world are excited to see what the future for TV and film holds with the conclusion of the strike. So, get to binging! We have a lot to catch up on before the awards.
