“The Outlook” editor’s thoughts prior to election day

In less than one week, tens of millions of Americans will head to the polls to cast their votes in the 2024 general election. The presidency, control of Congress and key governor’s races are all at stake with major implications. More than 46 million votes have already been cast through mail-in and early voting ballots, according to TIME Magazine. This week, the editors talk about their expectations for the next president, how we can overcome the great division in the country, and their feelings about the 2024 election.

The editors plan on voting in the 2024 election. One editor said, “This is going to be my first time voting in the general election and I couldn’t be more excited!”

Another said, “I think it’s important as an American citizen to participate in our democratic republic system of voting. And come on, voting is fun, it makes you feel important and like you can make a difference.” Another said, “I believe my vote matters, and in order to witness change, we must be a part of it.” In fact, Americans are already breaking early voting records.

While Americans have very strong opinions about Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, one of them will be the next President of the United States. When asked what they hope to see out of America’s next president, one editor replied, “I hope to see someone who can run this country efficiently and allow their citizens to feel pride in their president.”

Another replied, “I want to see a president who our kids can look up to as a role model, who knows right from wrong and fights for everyday Americans.”

Another said, “I hope we have a president who cares about the people and bringing people together instead of pinning one group against another.”

When asked about their feelings less than one week out from the 2024 election, one editor said, “I think there’s a lot riding on this election and if the wrong candidate is chosen, I’m worried about what the repercussions for the everyday American will be.” Another commented, “I feel nervous, but also eager to see the results.” Another said, “This will be the most important election of our lifetimes and I just want to see the results now.”

Lastly, the editors were asked about how we can all come together and ease the political tension that has divided America for too long. One editor replied, “I believe having civil, face-to-face conversations with those of opposite views of our own is a good step in the right direction.” Another said, “I think the biggest step that people should take is just treating everyone with kindness and empathy, regardless of if they’re Democrat or Republican.” Another replied, “the hate, the violence, and the rhetoric has been too heated for too long. America is strongest when its people are united and we have to get back to that.”

Election day is on Tuesday, Nov. 5, and you can find information about how and where to vote at vote.gov.
