Monmouth’s Delta Sigma chapter of Sigma Tau Delta will host their “Blind Date with a Book” event on Feb 14. from 1-3 p.m. in the Student Center Cafeteria.
Sigma Tau Delta, English Honors Society, is encouraging students not to judge books by their covers, a sentiment everyone has heard but may not have put into actual practice. Sigma Tau members and the Monmouth community helped contribute to the donation of over 150 books during their annual book drive last December. Around 100 children’s and young adult books were given to the Frances Foundation in Asbury Park for children battling pediatric cancer.
“The book drive was partially inspired by my previous dealings with the founder of the Francis Foundation, Robert Heugle,” said Hana Vozzo, M.A. candidate in English and President of Sigma Tau Delta. “This allowed us to donate not only to our philanthropic organization but give back to the Monmouth community as well.”
Other than Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14 marks International Book Giving Day. Sig Tau aims to blend both celebrations into an engaging and fun event that lets students pick out a free book without knowing the author or title. From science fiction to romance to memoir, each book is marked with a generic label to encourage exploration within a genre of interest or finding something new. Featuring titles from Sally Rooney, Colleen Hoover, and Stephen King, there are 80 books available for distribution. Students will also have the opportunity to collect a bookmark for their next new read.
Melaina Carrara, senior English major and Vice President of Sigma Tau Delta, said “Blind Date with a book is one of my favorite things that Sig Tau does. It’s a great way to get our members involved and such a fun and unique way to be able to give back to students at Monmouth.”
Whether picking up a new hobby or discovering a new title, Sig Tau welcomes all members of the Monmouth community to browse the selection of books on Friday and channel their inner bookworm!
