This past weekend, the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams competed in conference games, which resulted in a win and a very close loss.
On Saturday (3/29) at 11:00 a.m., the men’s lacrosse team traveled to Hampton, VA, to compete against Hampton University. This was their third Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) game, but their first win, as they dominated Hampton 24-4. This game shattered Monmouth’s record for goals scored in a game with 24, surpassing the old record of 17.
The game started off quickly with three goals in the first four minutes of the game, followed by two other goals. After the first quarter, five different Hawks found the net, leaving the score 5-1.
In the second quarter, Monmouth powered through and scored seven goals. At halftime, MU was up 12-1.
Sophomore faceoff Will Hohn Jr. continued Monmouth’s streak within the first few seconds of the second half with a goal of his own. After Monmouth continued to score, sophomore attack Brady Brown’s goal set the school record as the 18th of the day with his first career goal.
The Hawks kept up their momentum, only allowing three Hampton goals, leaving the final score 24-4.
Along with Hohn Jr. and Brown, four other Hawks (Terrence Lacewell, Riley Chester, Kade Hoogstaten, and Will Brimhall) netted their first goals of the 2025 season.
Ty Caffarelli led the team with three goals, which marked the eleventh time in program history that four or fewer goals were allowed, thanks to goalie Tommy Heller’s five saves. In total, Monmouth took 67 shots, also breaking the previous school record of 57.
The next day (3/30), the women’s lacrosse team faced Delaware at home at Kessler Stadium at 1:00 pm. This was their fourth conference loss, all in a row.
Sophomore midfielder, Sophia Ianno, opened the game’s scoring with an unassisted effort.
Junior attack Shea Berigan followed suit with two first-half goals. These goals continued her streak of two or more goals in 11 straight games. Throughout the first few quarters, no team led by more than two goals, resulting in four ties and four lead changes.
At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Delaware took the lead, 9-6. Senior midfielder Danielle McNeely scored two back-to-back goals, aided by senior midfielder Maddie Flynn, adding to the Hawks’ score.
Graduate student and attack Kate Carolonza tied the game up with eight seconds left in the game, seemingly forcing the game into overtime. However, with a different idea in their mind, Delaware scored a goal with zeros on the clock. According to the refs, the player beat the buzzer, leaving the Hawks stunned into a loss, 9-10.
The men’s team plays on Saturday (4/05) at Kessler Stadium against Towson, while the women play Friday (4/04) against Stony Brook in New York.
