M onmouth University Women’s Basketball dropped their game against University of Maryland (MD) Eastern Shore (UMES) on Tuesday, Nov. 11. MD Eastern Shore took the lead on the first shot of the game and never looked back. Despite a late surge from Monmouth, UMES led for the entirety of the game.
The first quarter was MD Eastern Shore’s strongest, as they scored 20 points to take an early 20-11 lead. UMES extended their lead to as much as 19 points in the second quarter, but a late surge led by junior forward Divine Dibula cut the lead to 11 heading into halftime.
Monmouth continued to chip into MD Eastern Shore’s lead in the third quarter, outscoring them 24-19 and cutting the lead to 55-49 heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, Monmouth got MD Eastern Shore’s lead down to as low as four points, but they couldn’t get over the hump and UMES closed out the game with a 71-66 victory. Senior guard Ashanti Lynch led MD Eastern Shore with 22 points.
As for Monmouth, junior forward Alexis Davis scored 18 points in defeat, the second most she’s scored in a game this season. She is currently averaging 14.3 points per game and is the only person on the team averaging double digit points through three games. Senior guard Alexis Andrews scored her career high as a Hawk, with 13 points. Freshman guard Madalena Amaro also showcased her skills, as she got 31 minutes and took advantage, scoring 13 points and going three for three on three point shots.
MD Eastern Shore played two more games following their win over Monmouth. They lost to Northwestern on Friday before going on the road and beating Loyola Chicago on Sunday. They currently sit at 3-2 on the season, and they play University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) on Wednesday before travelling to the Bahamas to play in the Battle 4 Atlantis against San Diego State and Princeton.
Monmouth sits at 1-2 of the season, still searching for their first win against a Division I opponent. They will return to the OceanFirst Bank Center to host the Howard Bison, who are 4-1 on the season that includes a win over Providence, a power conference team. That game will take place on Thursday, Nov. 20.
