If you couldn’t already tell by the 400 new emails in your inbox begging for your attention and all but coercing you into releasing your credit card numbers, Christmas is approaching. I have read the words “spend more, save more” at least a dozen times already, and I’m almost positive Santa set up workshop at Amazon Headquarters. I’m sick of the endless advertising (just this time dipped in peppermint), and I’ve been craving something more genuine. One thing that can replenish those warm feelings of joy and excitement I felt around this time of the year as a kid is a good Christmas playlist!
“I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” by The Jackson 5:
As a holiday classic with just the right amount of scandal, this one is a must. Plus, young Michael Jackson’s voice is adorably charming. It reminds me of childhood moments when I’d try to peek at my presents too early.
“Little Saint Nick” by The Beach Boys:
While Christmas at the Jersey Shore is a far cry from the beaches of California, at least weather-wise, “Little Saint Nick” encapsulates the laid-back vibe we all miss. If you blast the heat in your car and drive down Ocean Ave while playing this surf-rock tune, you may be able to remember what it was like when it was warm outside.
“It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” by Perry Como:
This classic has all the hallmarks of a perfect holiday song, evoking nostalgia as it paints a vivid picture of the season. You almost forget the sun sets at 4 p.m.
“You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch” by Thurl Ravenscroft and Boris Karloff:
The ultimate roast disguised as a children’s song. With its sassy lyrics and theatrical delivery, it brings to life the grumpy character we love to hate.
“Last Christmas” by Wham!:
The most dramatic holiday breakup anthem ever recorded. There have been years when I’ve found Christmas music redundant and annoying, and even then, “Last Christmas” still made the cut. Sparkly synths, heartbreak, and the annual tradition of pretending this year will be different!
“Blue Christmas” by Elvis Presley:
“Blue Christmas” is probably my favorite Christmas song. Presley croons like he’s decorating the tree in a dimly lit bar; it’s melancholy, swoony, and perfect for anyone who likes their holidays with a side of romantic yearning.
“My Love for You” by ESG:
While this one isn’t Christmas-specific, I think it’s a groovy, unexpected addition. It’s minimal, rhythmic, and perfect for anyone who decorates with disco balls.
“Mistletoe” by Justin Bieber:
The Bieber Fever doesn’t just go away when December first comes.
“Christmas Time Is Here” by Vince Guaraldi Trio:
Guaraldi’s soft piano and jazzy warmth carry me straight back to those elementary school days right before winter break. Remember when the teachers would play “A Charlie Brown Christmas” instead of sticking to the usual lessons? That nostalgic feeling is one I wish I could experience every year (if any of my professors are reading this, take notes), and this song definitely helps recreate that magic.
“Please Come Home for Christmas” by 2013 Remaster by Eagles:
The Eagles’ blend of soulful melodies and heartfelt lyrics captures the longing for home during the holidays. Each note resonates with those who crave the warmth of home and the company of loved ones. It’s a catchy reminder that the holiday spirit is about connection, love, and, in my family, political disagreement! All of which can often feel a bit out of reach during the busy holiday season, except for that last one. Chaos always brings us together.
“Snowman” by Sia:
This one is super special with its heartfelt lyrics and dreamy vocals; it’s almost like Sia created a wintery fairytale wrapped in sound. And there you have it—each song captures a little piece of the holiday spirit and all the feelings that come with it. Happy listening!
