Staying ahead this semester will be the key to your success

Before you drown in assignments and overthink every page of your syllabus, try these simple ways to stay ahead this semester. With a little planning, you can make this your most organized and successful semester yet.

Whether this is your first semester in college or your last, it’s important to understand what you can do to improve your organization, productivity, and overall success. To help you stay ahead, here are a few simple strategies every student can use this semester.

Use a planner or phone calendar
Whether you prefer to use a physical planner or your phone’s calendar app, take a few minutes to write out all your assignments, exams, and important events for the semester. Seeing everything in one place makes it easier to prioritize tasks, avoid last-minute stress, and stay on top of your workload.

Create a weekly routinePick a time each week to study, review notes, and prepare for upcoming classes. A routine helps your brain get into “work mode” and makes it easier to stay consistent without burning out.

    Take breaks and prioritize self-care
It sounds counterintuitive, but stepping away from your work can make you more productive. Short breaks can recharge your focus and improve your mood.

Set personal goals and reward yourself
Make small, achievable goals for each week or month, like finishing a reading ahead of schedule or acing a quiz. Celebrate your progress with something simple. This could be a coffee treat, a night out with friends, or even a relaxing evening off. As a senior here at Monmouth, I’ve realized that these so-called “simple” ways are easier said than done, but it’s important to recognize your strengths and weaknesses as a student before the semester gets away from you.

For many students at Monmouth, planning is key to success. For example, Owen Bill, a communication major and former Monmouth football player, balanced athletics and academics by staying organized. He said, “Being ahead of schedule makes my days a lot easier. The ability to stay organized is key in being able to balance different things throughout the semester.”

If you feel like you’re falling behind, there are several help centers right here on campus, such as the Math Tutoring Center in Howard Hall 203 and the Writing Center on the lower level of the Student Center.

However, visiting these centers isn’t just for when you’re struggling. Using them early in the semester can give you a head start and help you build stronger study habits. Tutors and staff can provide guidance on difficult concepts, review your work, and offer tips to improve your time management and organization.

Taking advantage of these resources shows initiative. It doesn’t mean you’re desperate or incapable, but rather that you’re proactive and setting yourself up to stay on top of your coursework and feel more confident throughout the semester. Remember, everyone is here to help you! The students are the reason for this school.

Staying on top of your courses, as well as your personal and academic life, can be challenging. However, if you try even one of these simple strategies, you can stay ahead this semester. With a little planning, you can make this your most organized and successful semester yet.
