The University’s football team’s second half rally against the Dukes of Duquesne University came up short resulting in a 30-21 loss to their former Northeast Conference foe. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 2-1 while the Dukes improve to 2-2.

SIDE LINES: 9/24/14
Sophomore goalie, Eric Klenofsky, was named the Wilson MAAC Defensive Player of the Week for his play during men’s soccers last two games. Klenofsky first shutout in-state rival Rutgers on Tuesday, Sept. 16, in a 3-0 Hawks win, and he followed up that performance with six saves against Villanova in what ended up being a 1-1 tie. This is the fifth time Klenofsky has received the award in his career.
Basile’s Interception Seals Wagner Nail-Biter
In a tough fought game, the Monmouth Hawks’ football team was able to close the deal on a victory over former Northeast Conference rival, the Wagner Seahawks with a final score of 21-16 thanks to the late-game heroics of freshman Mike Basile. With the victory, the Hawks improved to 2-0 for the season while the Seahawks fall to 1-2. The Hawks have now won three consecutive games against the rival from Staten Island.
R.I.P. to the Pit
With our ocean resembling a lake for the first week of school, the predicted swell for this past week had MU’s surfers frothing. High winds, a ripping current and massive Monday and Tuesday waves saddened surfers across the board.
Lady Hawks Win Four in a Row
The Hawks took on the Leopards of Lafayette on a cool night at The Great Lawn on Sunday, Sept. 14. MU controlled the game as they recorded their fifth shutout of the year with a final score of 3-0. Sharing the ball was key in MU’s victory as three separate Hawks scored. Goals were made by freshman forward Rachelle Ross, sophomore forward Alexis McTamney, and junior Monique Goncalves.
Soccer Posts Second Shutout
The University’s men’s soccer team improved their record to 3-1-0 this past Saturday with a 2-0 win over the Holy Cross Crusaders who now post a 0-2-1 record.
SIDE LINES: 9/17/14
The field hockey team was shutout 3-0 by Old Dominion, who is ranked 17th, this past Sunday, Sept. 14. With the loss MU falls to 2-3 on the young season. Old Dominion managed to score more goals than the Hawks got off shots, as the blue and white registered only two total shot attempts for the contest.
Cross Country Begins with Annual MU Kick-Off
The men’s and women’s cross country teams started off their season with a bang, both winning their first meet, the Monmouth XC Kick-Off on Saturday, Aug. 30. This annual competition is hosted by Monmouth as the first meet of the season. Held at Thompson Park in Lincroft, NJ, the meet allowed schools to gauge their performances for the future, while incorporating some friendly competition in the process.
Men’s Soccer Rallies to Beat Albany
The men’s soccer team came away with a come-from-behind road win over the University of Albany Great Danes this past Sunday, Sept. 7 by a score of 2-1 in double overtime.
What It Means to be a Student-Athlete
Many people perceive that a college athlete’s sole responsibility is to perform well on the field. While there is undoubtedly pressure to maintain a certain level of performance in their respective sports, there are several off the field obligations that athletes must fulfill. In addition to coping with the rigors of their playing schedule, athletes are expected to perform academically and act in a respectful manner while representing their University off the field. College athletes must handle all of these expectations in order to embrace the role of being a student-athlete.
