If one thing’s for sure in the last few days of 2015, it’s that Creed will not having you fighting to leave the movie theater. The new rendition of the famous Rocky movies have fans and critics applauding director, Ryan Coogler, stars Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone, along with the entire cast and crew of the film.
“You see this guy here? That’s the toughest opponent you’re ever going to have to face. I believe that’s true in the ring and I think that’s true in life”.
Rocky Balboa is back and he is a lot older and a lot wiser than when the first film premiered back in 1976. The sports drama film is a spinoff of the Rocky boxing saga which had six movies ahead of Creed. This time, Apollo Creed’s son, Adonis (Jordan), whom he never met, makes his way in and out of foster homes after his mom passes, eventually finding himself in the care of his father’s wife. Learning about his dad and understanding more about his drive to fight begins to make sense to Adonis, who is determined to make his hobby into a career. Tons of curveballs are thrown at Adonis throughout the film, such as a controversy on whether or not he can live up to his name, as well as whether or not he can he make is own legacy.
Jordan shines on the film as the new face of the Rocky franchise. His resemblance to Carl Weathers, who played Apollo Creed in the original casting, deserves recognition; not only does he look the part, but he plays it very well. The screenplays allow you to see a dedicated Adonis and captured the old school values the original Rocky movies held with a modern day twist to perfect the balance between the two.
It is no secret that the true star of the screen was Stallone. Creed brings out one of Stallone’s best performances since the original Rocky movie was released. Although a lot older now, the original audience and fan base will feel a sense of closure seeing what Rocky Balboa has been up to nowadays. With his wife Adrian and long life friend Mickey now gone, Rocky takes Adonis under his wing to see if the kid has what to takes to be the next great, and along the way fights even some more battles of his own.
Not only did the casting, screenplay, and actors shine, but the music made the movie flow and transition phenomenally. The music score which was written by composer Ludwig Goransson, who is only the third composer in the Rocky saga and made the film even more of a work of art. A few modern day songs made their way into the movie, giving a nice touch for the younger audiences who may be only getting their first taste of the Rocky history from Creed.
Creed was released in theaters on Nov. 25, the same date which corresponds to the 40th anniversary of the opening scene of the original film. For the older generations who have grown up with the Rocky movies, this film will be in no way a disappointment. For the younger generations, there is no need to watch the first six movies before heading to the theater to watch. Either way this film is powerful and teaches everyone a strong lesson in believing in yourself and to never, ever give up and always keep fighting. It’s truly a knockout!
