Mixed Results for Field Hockey

The Monmouth University field hockey team (4-6, 1-1 CAA) competed in a lengthy CAA conference match at home on “So Sweet A Cat” Field against No. 19 William & Mary (7-4, 1-0 CAA), ultimately losing 2-1 in shootouts. The Hawks bounced back later in the week, closing the weekend at home with an 8-0 over Sacred Heart (0-9).


The Hawks faced William & Mary on Friday, Sept. 30 at 3 p.m.


The Tribe’s Allison Goodwin scored the first goal of the game at the start of the second quarter. Monmouth’s Annick van Lange answered midway through the third quarter with her sixth goal of the season and 57th career point off a corner, assisted by Meis Kengen and Bente Steenhorst. This marks Kengen’s third assist of 2022 and Steenhorst’s fourth and 10th of her career.


Annick van Lange is only three goals away from breaking Monmouth’s all-time scoring record. Van Lange currently leads the Hawks with 14 points on the season.


The score remained 1-1 throughout regulation and two periods of overtime. The Hawks held an 11-10 shots on goal advantage in the contest. The game finished after eight shootout rounds where the Tribe won 2-1. This was Monmouth’s first shootout game of the 2022 season and the first since March 19, 2021, where the Hawks defeated Vermont 1-0.


The Tribe’s Maddie George made five saves during the game and saved five out of eight attempts in the shootout for William & Mary. Monmouth’s Phileine Hazen made seven saves and saved four out of eight attempts in the shootout for the Hawks.


William & Mary was up 2-0 early in shootouts, but Monmouth responded with goals from Meis Kengen and Annick van Lange to bring the match to a tie. Johanna Karlhuber contributed an additional successful shootout in the sixth round, but the Tribe responded with their own and scored the final point in the eighth round of shootouts, winning the frame 4-3 and the overall game 2-1.


Monmouth’s home record is now 3-3. William & Mary holds a 4-1 record on the road. The Hawks have a 2-3 record in games decided beyond regulation in the 2022 season.


After the devastating loss, the Hawks prepared to face Sacred Heart on “So Sweet A Cat” Field in the midst of inclement weather conditions on Sunday, Oct. 2 at noon.


Annick van Lange scored in each quarter of regulation, totaling four goals for the day. Van Lange set the Monmouth field hockey record with her 60th career goal being her third in the game. Van Lange leads the Hawks with 23 points on the season.


Jess Tucker scored her first two goals of the 2022 season, taking the Hawks to a 4-0 lead before halftime.
The second half began with van Lange’s record-setting goal, followed by goals from Katie Yoder and freshman Rosa Boender in the third quarter. With 3:11 remaining in the game, van Lange scored the final goal to secure the 8-0 victory for the Hawks.


Following this competition, the Hawks are now 4-3 at home. Annick van Lange achieved her first four-goal game, securing Monmouth’s largest victory since Oct. 5, 2018 when the Hawks achieved a 10-0 win over LIU Brooklyn. Ally Tarantino earned 30 minutes of playing time with her first appearance of 2022 in goal.


Looking ahead, the Hawks will face Princeton in a noon matchup on Oct. 5 at “So Sweet A Cat” Field.
