The Monmouth University women’s tennis team (2-1) earned victories over St. Francis Brooklyn (0-1) and Rider (0-1) on Wednesday, Sept. 28 and Thursday, Sept. 29, respectively.
The Hawks earned their first win of the season against St. Francis Brooklyn in a decisive 7-0 victory, making their record 1-1.
Zoë Klapman, Lenien Jamir, Hana McKinney, Jordyn Pax, Lana Brezanin, and Lauren Landstrom secured singles victories for Monmouth. Landstrom’s match against SFB’s Valentine Mudry in No. 6 singles went into a third set after splitting the first two sets 6-7 (4) and 6-0, with Landstrom prevailing 10-6 in the deciding set.
The Hawks saw equal success in doubles competition. Monmouth’s Klapman and Pax defeated SFB’s Margherita Fiorio and Mia Skrbinsek 6-3 – Jamir and Landstrom won against the opposing Ximena Cano and Valentine Mudry with the same score. McKinney and Brezanin faced a closer match against SFB’s Lincy Valencia and Nicolle Romero, narrowly coming out on top 7-6 (4).
The next day, Monmouth traveled to Lawrenceville to face Rider, where the Hawks earned their second victory of the season to improve their record to 2-1. This was also Monmouth’s first victory on the road, making their away record 1-0.
Monmouth again dominated singles competition, winning all but one match over the Broncs. Klapman, Jamir, McKinney, Pax, and Brezanin all saw singles victories, while Landstrom fell to Rider’s Ella O’Malley 6-4 6-4.
The Hawks came within a tie break of the doubles point but ultimately fell to the visiting team. McKinney and Brezanin lost to Rider’s Samantha Killin and O’Malley in No. 2 doubles 6-2. Klapman and Pax were also defeated by the Broncs, losing a close No. 1 doubles match 7-6 (4). Jamir and Landstrom secured the only doubles competition win for the Hawks, defeating Sofia Gutierrez and Raquel Bolin in a decisive 6-1 victory.
Still, Monmouth ultimately prevailed over the Broncs in a narrow 5-2 win, marking the second victory of the season. Prior to their victories over SFB and Rider, the Hawks started their season 0-1 after losing to Sacred Heart 1-6 on Wednesday, Sept. 21.
Looking ahead, the Hawks will travel to Kingston to face Rhode Island in a dual match on Friday, Oct. 7 before competing in the Rhody Doubles tournament on Saturday, Oct. 8.
