For the past four months there have been multiple investigations taking place in the U.S. on current and former politicians. As most know, former President Donald Trump has been indicted in Georgia, Florida, Manhattan, and Washington. There are also a number of state and federal prosecutors opening investigations on the former president.
While Trump has been the main headline of the news for not only his investigations but also for running for president yet again, Biden is now facing an investigation as well that could lead to his presidency ending before elections take place in November 2024. Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy came out on September 12th 2023 stating that evidence has been found that the President and his son have committed crimes in their business decisions with countries such as China and Russia.
Ever since Republicans re-took the house majority last year, the White House has been building a team of legal experts and spokespeople to counter the congressional investigations launched into the president and his son Hunter Biden. Many spokespersons in the White House have stated that the republicans have been investigating Biden for nine months but have turned up with no evidence of any wrongdoing. Still to this day Republicans have yet to pull up any evidence that President Biden has been profiting off his son’s business deals or that the president has committed any higher crimes. It seems republicans have latched on to the testimony of Devon Archer, one of Hunter Biden’s former business partners.
Archer told the house oversight and accountability committee that over a ten year period Hunter put his father on speakerphone while talking to business associates about 20 times. Also that Joe Biden had attended two meals with Hunter and his business associates.
Archer did also tell the committee that though Biden was present during certain dealings, he did not discuss business matters on any of the calls or meetings. The complete lack of hard evidence is not hard to decipher, but public opinion says otherwise.
About 61% of Americans believe the President was involved in his son’s business dealings while he was vice president, with 42% believing the involvement was illegal.
When examining the situation a bit more, it is clear to see that there is no hard evidence that McCarthy could have possibly found against president Biden. McCarthy has been under intense pressure from the far right GOP members to press for impeachment even though some people are claiming it is too early and not enough evidence is gathered to do so. With a slim majority of 222-212 in the House McCarthy is now pushing forward with impeachment on President Biden.
The White House said giving into their demands would show that the exercise is a costly legitimate, politically motivated exercise not rooted in reality. Politically unpopular impeachment hearings have hurt the party before.
In the 1998 midterms republicans lost seats following the impeachment of then-President Bill Clinton. It seems that the Republican party might be suffering more losses with their decision to attempt to impeach Biden. Unless the republicans do have enough evidence to do so, McCarthy did not give reasoning for forgoing a vote on impeachment but it suggests he may not have had the support within his 218 votes needed to do so.
Several different republicans have disagreed on impeaching Biden in recent weeks. McCarthy’s decision may do more harm then good to not only the Republican party but also the rest of Congress, it is no secret that the American government is split by a clear line. Only a few representatives are willing to work with the other side in coming up with logical solutions to help the American people in these hard times.
What America needs is for Congress and the presidency to work together instead of working against each other. Even when Trump was in office it seemed like Congress as well as the Speaker of the House at the time was extremely focused on a possible Trump impeached as well. The only difference as of right now is that the Democratic Party had more evidence and reasoning for doing so.
