Monmouth fall sports are in full swing as Men’s Tennis opens its fall season with two consecutive victories in one day. On Wednesday, Sept. 20, Monmouth defeated Rider 7-0, and later that day went on to win 7-0 against Lafayette.
In the first matchup of the day against Rider, six players made their Monmouth debut from across the globe. These players consisted of Mateo Bivol, a junior from France; Yoav Weinburg, a junior from Israel; Adam Hillerby, a graduate student from the United Kingdom; Gabriel Berner, a freshman from Sweden; Francisco Erramuspe, a graduate student from Uruguay; Alex Martinez Sanz, a sophomore from Spain.
Six singles competed in the match against Rider: Mateo Bivol, Gabriel Busato, Francisco Erramuspe, Alex Martinez Sanz, Diego Laporta, and Christof Zeiler. The Hawks came out swinging, and each Hawk defeated their opponent to start the day off strong.
This was not the only time we saw these Hawks compete against the Broncs that day. Three pairs of doubles faced the Broncs and came out victorious in each match. Bivol and Weinburg faced their first double of the season and won 6-1. The second doubles team to face Rider was Busato and Laporta who won their doubles match 6-2. The last doubles match we saw of the morning was Hillerby and Zeiler who won their match 5-3 to round off the doubles matches until the afternoon.
Monmouth walked away from their first match of the season with victories all across the board. The order of finish resulted in singles (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) and doubles (3, 1, 2).
Monmouth then continued their streak as they faced Lafayette and won 7-0 later that afternoon.
In the doubles matches against Lafayette, the Hawks again saw six singles as well as three doubles compete. In singles, there were three new faces: freshman Berner played his first single of the day along with his first double match and won both. Weinberg played his first single of the day and got his second win. Hillbery also made his debut against Lafayette in two singles matches, where he also won 6-1 and 6-4. The order of finish versus Lafayette was singles (4, 6, 5, 3, 1, 2) and doubles was (1, 3).
After Wednesday’s competition Monmouth is now 2-0 and will host Sacred Heart today, Sept. 27 where they hope to make that record 3-0. It looks as if this team has a lot in store this season, and a lot of talent and skill to take them far.
