Why Halloween is the best holiday ever

The best time of the year is here, and of course, I am talking about Halloween. A holiday filled with so many unique activities and traditions that can only be acceptable one day of the year. There is truly no other day like it. So I’m here, as Halloween’s number one fan, to tell you why Halloween is the superior celebration.

First off, who doesn’t love dressing up in costume? It’s a way to express your talents and interests all while wearing something you might not usually wear on a day-to-day basis. It’s the only time when you will see a fairy, a priest, a clown, and a sparkly margarita passing you by on the street.

“I love Halloween because it’s so much fun to dress up. I always love to do silly costumes and see what other people come up with,” agreed Kristen Frawley, senior social work and sociology major.

Whether you enjoy spending time at home or going out, Halloween provides the perfect opportunity to do either. Now that we are all college students, the joys of trick-or-treating are over, but that doesn’t stop us from being able to go out to parties and bars to have a great time with our friends.

“As a kid, I had a fun time trick or treating with my friends and that made me love the season of Halloween. Even now that I’m older and don’t trick or treat anymore, it’s still nostalgic,” explained William Horn, senior music major.

But if spending too much money on drinks that have a 50% chance of getting spilled on you isn’t your dream for this evening, staying in with loved ones, or yourself of course, is also a great way to spend the day.

“I like Halloween because I love everything to do with the fall season and I love watching spooky movies,” agrees Olivia Puzio, a senior psychology major. There are so many spooky movies perfect for the occasion. If you need some recommendations, there of a ton of Halloween movies available on streaming platforms. Some of my favorites include William Friedkin’s “The Exorcist” on HBO, Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho” on Netflix, and Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” on Peacock. These movies, plus some Halloween candy and eerie lighting, will ensure your night is filled with nothing but terror.

Halloween is the one holiday that is defined by its sweat treats. There are truly so many to choose from. There is candy (duh), pumpkin spice everything, those donut spider donuts from Dunkin, and of course a Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL) from any coffee shop.

“I like the seasonal treats and the candy, it’s always been the best part,” admits Kate Lenosky, senior fine arts major, and Jake Deluca, senior social work major.

Despite the actual festivities for the day, Halloween also starts the festivities for the greatest time of the year, the span between October and January when four holidays are celebrated back to back– Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s. As soon as I notice the leaves change color, I know the best of the year is yet to come. It’s back-to-back fun, and Halloween is only the start!

So, I hope you all truly embrace the spooky season this year and partake in as many Halloween events as you can. If not for yourself, I hope you do it for me.
