The Monmouth University Men’s basketball team (7-7) traveled to Maryland, where they went up against the Towson Tigers (13-1) on Saturday, Feb. 15.
This game was the second encounter between the two teams this season. On Feb. 8, the Towson Tigers traveled to Monmouth University’s OceanFirst Bank Center. This game between the Tigers and Hawks ultimately ended with Towson winning 73-67. The battle between the two continued as the Hawks traveled to the TU Arena this past Saturday.
On Saturday afternoon, the Monmouth University Men’s basketball team versed Towson University in an action-packed game. Junior guard Madison Durr, sophomore forward Cornelius Robinson III, sophomore guard Abdi Bashir Jr, junior center Dok Muordar, and junior guard Jack Collins started this game.
The first half was caught with setbacks after Collins started the game with a three, and Towson responded by going on a 17-5 run, which put the Tigers in the lead by 13. The Towson Tigers had seven three-pointers, which they took to finish the first half with 39-20. In the first half, the Tigers lead in FG% with 40.54% to the Hawks 23.53% and 3PT% of 38.89% to Monmouth’s 30%. Monmouth did lead the FT percentage with 69.23% to Towson’s 50%.
As the second half continued, Monmouth started off with a good layup from Robinson. Points tallied in from the Hawks but ultimately, the Tigers powered through to win the half by seven points. After holding onto their lead at the half and expanding on it, the Towson Tigers won the game 80-54.
In the second half, Monmouth showed more of a statical improvement, leading the second half FG% with 44.44% to Towson’s 42.42% and the FT% at 100% (2-2) to Towson’s 90.91% .
Durr led Monmouth with nine points, and Collins had nine rebounds this game. This was also Bashir’s 100th three pointer of the season, which makes him the first player in Division I to make 100 threes this year and the second Monmouth University Hawk in school history to hit this mark. This game led to Fagan scoring his first career points, while Orchard had a career-high four points this game
The Hawks will travel to Hempstead NY to face Hofstra on Thursday. Feb. 20.
