Men’s Soccer wrapped up their sixth game of the season with a loss to Northeastern, 2-1.
The team played on Sept. 13 on the Monmouth University campus, this being their third home game of the season. Both team’s conference records were close before the game started, setting them up for a tight matchup.
The game started off relatively quiet, with the defense from both teams keeping the goal tightly closed. Monmouth had five shots on goal in the first half to Northeastern’s six.
The Huskies scored the first goal in the 33rd minute of the game, putting the Hawks down by one. Only eight minutes later, Northeastern followed up with an unassisted goal by senior midfielder Morris Matthews. He also assisted on the Huskies’s previous goal.
The next 30 minutes consisted of two yellow cards, one for each team, yet no new goals. Monmouth continued to fight to catch up to Northeastern, firing eight shots on goal in the second half and scoring their first goal 76 minutes into the game, making it a one goal game. The goal was scored by junior forward Andrea Croce and assisted by senior forward Jakob Friedman and graduate defender Camron Lawrence.
The remainder of the game saw two more yellow cards, both on Northeastern, but they were not enough to allow the Hawks to catch up, as the game ended in a final score of 2-1.
Men’s Soccer will play their next game on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at La Salle University. Monmouth will head into this game with an overall record of 2-3-1, with La Salle’s overall record being 1-1-4. It is yet to be known if Monmouth will be able to use La Salle’s tie-heavy record to their advantage and come out with a much-needed win to stabilize their record.
