Sometimes, you need to have out with the old and in with the new. Yet how are you supposed to know when it’s time to do so? Especially when different items have different lifespans. Well, you’re in luck because after intense research, I’m ready to inform you all when to replace what.
First, we’re going to discuss you! Everyone’s favorite topic! More specifically, cleaning.
Face
U.S. Dermatology Partners thinks you should wash your face twice a day. There are many benefits of getting the accumulated dirt, makeup, dead skin cells, sweat, pollutants, and oils off your face. If you are a little lazy and only want to do it once a day, Jean-Charles, MD, said that’s perfectly fine, but try to strive for twice a day.
Hair
This one is a little tricky. It depends on the style of your hair, thickness, texture, and even where you live! However, Vogue says it’s safe to say that you shouldn’t wash your hair every day. For this one, I would advise you to do some additional research.
Body
It’s simple! To limit body odor, infections, acne, and eczema flare-ups, once a day should be the goal (Cleveland Clinic Health Essentials).
Let’s explore changing self-care items now, rather than cleaning.
Louffa
Every three to four weeks, this yeast bacteria playground should be replaced according to Women’s Health Magazine. Mold actually shows as soon as you leave it in the shower due to the moist environment, so maybe think about a different alternative to use.
Razor
Changing your razor roughly every one to two weeks can help avoid skin irritation, razor burn, and dull, pulling blades. If you have thick hair or sensitive skin, think about getting rid of it after about six shaves (Gillette Venus).
Toothbrush
For adults, using a toothbrush for three to four months is enough. For children, the timeline is shortened to every two to three months. Using a weak toothbrush makes the brush less effective. Also, if you are sick, you may want to change it right when you start to get better (Cleveland Clinic Health Essentials).
Brushes
This is actually something not many people think about. Hairbrushes can trap a lot of grease, bacteria, and product buildup in between the bristles. Every six to twelve months is about the time to think about switching to a new brush, according to Women’s Health Magazine.
Makeup
Makeup brushes, however, are okay if properly cleaned after every use until three years pass (Smith Cosmetics).
To avoid bacterial growth and skin irritation, Today.com said mascara and liquid eyeliner should be replaced every three to six months, liquid foundation/concealer six months to a year, and powders/lipsticks every two years.
Now that bathroom items are out of the way, we can discuss more items you may find in your bedroom.
Sheets
Apparently, you should replace your bed sheets once a week (Sleep Foundation). Let’s just say I did not know that. Now that I do, am I going to do it? Sorry, but no. Cleveland Clinic Health Essentials gives us a little more time and said one to two weeks is fine. Washing pillows, comforters, and mattresses should be focused on about twice a year.
Pillows
To ensure proper hygiene and support, pillows should be replaced about every two years. Southern Living suggests this time frame due to accumulated dead skin cells, oil, and dust mites over time.
Socks
When I say socks, I don’t mean how many times a day you change them, but more like when you should throw out the smelly ones with holes and buy a new pack. Unless they get incredibly dirty or ripped, replacing socks can be a yearly thing. So, as you’re reading this, think about how many socks you have that are more than a year old. It might be time to treat your feet. (Pierre Henry Socks).
Underwear
Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty and talk about underwear. When thinking about when it’s time to swap out new underwear, you should simply look at the underwear. Overall, ensure proper hygiene, comfort, and elasticity are part of the deal. If you’re washing them with detergent in warm/hot water, you’re killing the bacteria, so there’s no need to constantly get rid of pairs (Shadowline Lingerie).
Electronics
Switching gears a tad, CBS News believes people should upgrade to a newer version of their phone every three to four years. This is simply keeping the battery function, phone performance, and software updates in mind.
Computers, on the other hand, are made to last longer. Three to five years is the sweet spot here (HP). When your computer seems to lag and get to extreme temperatures, burning the living daylights out of your lap, it’s time to upgrade!
Car oil
You can find more specific information at your car dealership or by looking at your car manual. However, Bull Valley Ford suggests a change is needed anywhere from 5,000 to 10,000 miles with synthetic oil and 3,000 to 5,000 miles with conventional oil.
Tires
Your tires should be rotated about every six months to ensure even tread wear and improved safety (Wesley Chapel Toyota).
