Monmouth Men’s Soccer headed up to Boston to take on the Northeastern Huskies this past Saturday evening for their third conference match of the year.
The Hawks started strong, generating a corner kick just 41 seconds into play. They had two shots on goal in the first half. Junior forward Victor Andersson got a shot on the bottom left side in the 23rd minute. Sophomore defender Leo Zonta put a header towards the top of the goal. However, Huskies junior goalkeeper Brady Elmblad was able to get a hand on the ball.
After exchanging shots for the duration of the first half, Northeastern had the edge with five while Monmouth sat at three. Both teams remained scoreless heading into the last 45.
The Hawks had another strong look in the 69th minute from senior defensemen Raul Garcia, as he put a shot on goal towards the bottom left side. Elmblad, once again, got a hand on the ball to keep the score tied at zero.
It was in the 83rd minute that the Huskies broke open the scoring. Sophomore midfielder Will Schmidt got the ball past Monmouth’s sophomore goalkeeper Herman Johnsen. Schmidt’s goal came off a corner kick by freshman midfielder Kortay Koc.
Monmouth could not get one of their own to the back of the net and fell to Northeastern with a final score of 1-0. The loss puts the Hawks at 1-1-1 in CAA play.
As the men’s team came back to the nest, Monmouth’s women’s soccer team headed up to Stony Brook, New York to take on the Seawolves Sunday afternoon.
The Hawks offense came out strong, generating 11 shots and 4 corner kicks in the first half alone. Sophomore defender Charlee Perna put a shot on goal in just the fourth minute but was blocked by the Seawolves senior goalkeeper Jona Hennings Senior midfielder Chloe Messer put a second shot on goal for the Hawks in the 35th minute but Hennings earned another block. The game went into halftime scoreless.
Despite the strong performance from Monmouth in the first half, it was Stony Brook that struck first. Senior defender Emanuelly Ferreira found the back of the net with assists from freshman midfielder Juni Einarsson and junior midfielder Maya Corbett.
Despite firing off another 8 shots and maintaining possession for 59% of the game, the Hawks could not find the back of the net and fell to the Seawolves with a final score of 1-0. This loss moved them to 0-1 in CAA play, and they look to even out their conference record this Thursday at UNCW.
