The women’s soccer team made a statement on Hesse Field this past Wednesday, Oct. 1 as they conquered the Saint Peter’s University Peacocks in a dominant 8-0 victory. This puts MU’s record at 2-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and 7-4 overall. Coming off of a tough conference loss at Canisius on Saturday, the Hawks needed to prove their presence in the MAAC. Fortunately for MU, they did just that, posting their sixth shutout this season amongst five different goal scorers.

Field Hockey Edged by No. 20 Michigan State
On a rainy Saturday afternoon, the Hawks faced the nationally ranked Spartans of Michigan State on So Sweet A Cat Field to conclude their five game home stand. MU had the momentum early in the 22nd minute as senior forward and team captain Amanda Schoenfeld scored the first goal of the game. Three minutes later, a controversial call gave Michigan State a penalty stroke. Unfortunately for the Hawks, Alli Helwig put it past starting goalie Christen Piersanti to tie the score at one leaving momentum up for grabs.
SIDE LINES: 10/8/14
Freshman forward, Rachelle Ross, was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week for women’s soccer this past Monday, October 6.
A Look at Zach Fabel
Typically, shore towns are known to produce surfers and sailors. Junior tight end Zach Fabel is an exception. Originally hailing from Brigantine, NJ, he arrived at the University in 2012, but red-shirted as a freshman and did not see the football field until last season. The true freshman came bursting onto the field last year. Coming in at 6’3″ and 265-pounds, Fabel made an impact in his second career game when he caught a 42-yard pass for a touchdown against Liberty University. The Hawks would go on to lose that particular game, however, Fabel was a bright spot and proved his football ability.
Hawks Defeat Lehigh for Third Win
The Hawks’ football team edged the Leigh University Mountain Hawks 28-21, on Sept. 27 at Goodman Stadium. The win pushes MU’s record to 3-1 while Lehigh falls to 0-4 for the season.
Freshman Leads Golf
The men’s golf team finished sixth overall, in a nine team field, at the Tuxedo Autumn Invitational hosted by Columbia University this past weekend.
Surfing is Not Just a Hobby; It’s a Lifestyle
We left off last time hoping for waves during the upcoming week, as usual. This week, Mother Ocean delivered. On Sunday the swell was building, from early morning to the sun’s last rays, surfers found some clean three to four footers. Although, no one was satisfied, the prediction for the next day was even better. When Monday rolled around there was excitement in the air. I woke and went to my first class hoping that it would go fast.
SIDELINES: 10/01/2014
Women’s soccer suffered their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference defeat this past Saturday. The team was edged 3-2 by the Canisius Golden Griffins at the Demske Sports Complex.
Monmouth Shines at Annual Invitational
Aside from the Annual XC Kickoff, Monmouth’s Cross Country program hosts an additional annual meet early in the season. After giving an exceptional performance at the XC-Kickoff at Thompson Park two weeks ago, the Hawks performed admirably once again at the Monmouth Invitational on Sept. 20. This second invitational is held at the challenging course of Holmdel Park in Holmdel, NJ. The hilly course is feared by high school and collegian runners alike for its signature, 180 meter steep incline known as “the bowl.”
