Men’s Tennis Defeats Wagner & Sacred Heart

On Wednesday, September 22, the Monmouth University men’s tennis team improved to 2-0 earning a pair of victories in a major defeat over Wagner 7-0 in the morning and Sacred Heart 6-1 in the afternoon. Their regular season winning streak now increased to 12 consecutive matches. 

The morning consisted of wins, wins, and more wins for the Hawks. In the singles competition, Monmouth went undefeated. Sophomore Charlie Penman defeated Wagner’s Tejasvi Mehra 6-3 and 6-4 and Monmouth’s junior Victor Castro defeated Rodrigo Perez 6-3 and 6-0. Then came Hawk sophomore Diego Laporta who defeated Omar Loutfy 6-2 and 6-4 with junior Arthur Dussaubat winning against Aryan Gupta 6-2 and 6-0. Finally, junior Christof Zeiler defeated Jaisai of Wagner 6-0 and 6-0 with senior Austin Klapman winning against Lucas Darling 6-1 and 6-1. 

In the doubles competition, Monmouth’s Penman and senior Neils Van Noord defeated Tejasvi Mehra whom Penman faced earlier that day, and Lucas Darling 6-1 and 6-1. Yet another win was committed when Klapman and senior Sasha Pachnev came out on top over Omar Loutfy and Jaisai 6-1. The only loss of the day came out of Wagner’s Rodrigo Perez and Aryan Gupta’s defeat over Monmouth’s Dussaubat and Zeiler with a score of 6-2. 

The overall order of finish in doubles went 1, 2, 3 and 5, 6, 4, 2, 3, 1 in singles. 

The afternoon rolled around and Monmouth continued earning wins. In the singles competition, Van Noord defeated Sacred Heart’s William Wibmer 6-4 and 6-2. Then Dmitry Bezborodov won against Lefteri Apostolu 6-1 and 6-2 with Lucca Silva demolishing Matyas Vencl 7-5 and 6-2. 

One loss took place when Pioneer Ayman Khan defeated Monmouth’s Gabriel Busato 6-1 and 3-1 but both Trent Massam and Laporta earned wins against Darius Eftekhar 6-3 and 6-1 and Lucca Casalduc Pla 6-4 and 6-1 respectively. 

Then came the doubles competition against the Pioneers. First, a loss took place for the Hawks with Sacred Heart’s Wibmer and Lefteri Apostolou beating Monmouth’s Bezborodov and Busato 6-1. It wasn’t too long before more Monmouth matches were added to the win column with Silva and Laporta beating Sacred Heart’s Casalduc Pla and Tyler Lowe 6-1. Hawks’ Castro and Massam then won against Vencl and Eftekhar 6-4. 

Monmouth ultimately went 2-0 with Sacred Heart finishing 0-1. The order of finish for the doubles was 1, 2, 3 with the singles being 2, 1, 3, 4, 5, 6. 

Next, the boys in blue and white look to continue their winning streak when they compete in the Army Invite at West Point, NY from October 8 to the 10.
