A CAA opener for Monmouth’s women’s lacrosse did not end in the favor of the Hawks. Accumulating a 4-3 record leading up to the first game in CAA play of the 2024 season, the Hawks fell to 4-4 on the season and 0-1 in conference play after a 16-13 loss to the Elon Phoenixes on Saturday, Mar. 16.
With not much of a history between the two teams, the Hawks know what it is like to face Elon in a CAA opener after winning by one, 12-11, last season.
On Saturday, the matchup started almost identical to last season’s match against Elon, as the Phoenixes gained a quick lead of 5-1 and 10-4 before halftime. The Hawks regained control to open up the second half and scored six of the first seven goals. The Hawks were then able to pull within a goal of Elon, thanks to senior Mya Brock’s second goal of the day, which capped the third-quarter scoring.
In the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, the Phoenixes took their advantage back with three goals and were able to secure the win against Monmouth. Junior Caroline Brennan had yet another impressive performance against Elon with five goals, securing her fifth hat trick of the season and totaling 26 goals so far. Junior Danielle McNeely had a five-point day with a pair of goals and three assists.
The Hawks will face Towson for their second CAA matchup of the season on Mar. 22 at noon for just their second home game of the season.
