Women’s soccer faces first CAA loss

A pair of goals from Towson in the second half , gave Monmouth their first loss in CAA play this season on Sunday Oct. 20 in Towson, Maryland.

The Hawks held a 2-1-3 all time series record against Towson going into Sunday’s matchup as they looked to capture their third win against Towson since 1992.

Both goalkeepers were tested early as both teams had two shots apiece in the first 10 minutes.
Midfielder Madison Perna got a piece of it but Towson goalkeeper Riley Melendez kept it out of net preventing Monmouth from getting on the board. Goalkeeper Cassie Coster had a nice save of her own and both teams went into the half scoreless.

At 52:27, Towson’s Malin Bernt Schops got one past Coster to give Towson the 1-0 lead.
Monmouth fought back even harder as forward Summer Reimet had a shot that was saved by Melendez. Forward Loren Gehret found herself an oppurtunity on a corner kick that hit the crossbar and didn’t make it in.

As Monmouth continued to battle and Coster put up a pair of saves, Towson broke through once again at 76:43 from Courtney Butlion who gave Towson the two point advantage.

The Hawks fought until the very end putting up three shots in the final five minutes but were unsuccessful on any of them.

Coster finished with eight saves as well as Melendez. .Just this season, Coster now has seven matches with five or more. On the offensive side of things, both Reimet and defender Lauren Bruno led the Hawks with four shots each. Three of Reimet’s four on goal. Both teams put up a collective 16 shots each, but it was the two that were able to break through that gave Towson the victory.

The Hawks will face Hofstra on Thursday Oct. 24 in Hempstead New York for their second to last game of the regular season.
