Fifty new members were inducted into Monmouth’s chapter of Phi Sigma Eta, a freshman honors society, on March 13, 2025.
Commencing at 6:30 p.m. in the Great Hall Auditorium, the ceremony kicked off with opening remarks from Phi Sigma Eta’s President, Lyndsey Buren. Then, chapter advisor, Professor Golam M. Mathbor, MSS, MSW, Ph.D., RSW, Professor of social work, congratulated inductees on this great academic achievement. Mathbor also encouraged members to continue working hard and uphold an excellent academic standard.
Phi Sigma Eta is one of the oldest and largest national honor societies for first-year students. Members must hold a high academic standard, and, upon induction, will receive networking opportunities, access to potential scholarships, and entry to a community of fellow Members.
“The Phi Eta Sigma induction ceremony went wonderfully! It was a great opportunity to celebrate the academic achievements and hard work of our newly inducted freshmen members. We had great participation from our current executive board and new inductees,” said Buren.
Tara Mahon, Vice President of Phi Sigma Eta, added, “Our event ran smoothly, tasks were delegated for the executive board to complete in preparation. I hope new members feel accomplished for their hard work and motivation to succeed throughout their entire academic career. As an organization, we are committed to our values and philanthropy. Involvement with our values encourages growth in each student’s academic careers. In addition, the organization offers members of distinction status and scholarship opportunities that members of Phi Eta Sigma can apply for.”
The keynote address was given by Joseph Coyle, Ph.D., Dean of the School of Science. Coyle was awarded a plaque by Mathbor to commemorate his participation in the ceremony.
accomplishedMathbor was also given a plaque by the officers of Phi Sigma Eta for his 20 years of service and leadership at Monmouth University.
The ceremony concluded with Mathbor thanking the members of Phi Eta Sigma’s executive board for their dedication to the society. Members of the executive board include: Lyndsey Buren, President; Tara Mahon, Vice President; Zulmy Lozano, Secretary; Nicole Incontrera, Treasurer; and Camilla Alvarez-Gutierrez, Historian. Mathbor also expressed appreciation for Ms. Heidi Haupt, Administrative Support, for the assistance she provides to the Society.
“I hope that new members invest in the three important Phi Eta Sigma values. The honor society emphasizes vigor and discipline of mind, care and respect for the body, and, above all, nobility and generosity of character. Phi Eta Sigma provides yearly programming centered on the principles of developing one’s mind, health, and character. I encourage all of our Monmouth University PES members to get involved in the PES community at both the chapter and national levels,” concluded Buren.
