Monmouth Field Hockey takes down Rutgers to improve to 6-1

The Monmouth Hawks took down the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in a 4-2 victory this past Sunday on a road trip to Piscataway to snap a six game losing streak to the Scarlet Knights; the Hawks improved their record to 6-1 on the season.

Two of the Hawks goals came in the first quarter. Emily Singer, senior forward, was assisted by Keely Bowers, sophomore midfielder, on her first goal of the season. Just eight minutes and 30 seconds into the game, the Hawks were up 1-0. Just under two minutes later, the Hawks expanded their lead with a goal from Lauren Relik, junior midfielder, assisted by Alicia Vanderlyde, freshman midfielder.

The Hawks maintained their 2-0 lead through the first half. Two minutes and 58 seconds into the third quarter, Rutgers struck with a goal from Paulina Niklaus, graduate defender, with her first goal of the season.

Just under 90 seconds later, Monmouth answered right back. Milla Frye, sophomore midfielder, was assisted by Anna Moors, junior defender, to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead. At the start of the fourth quarter, Monmouth added their fourth and final goal of the game, coming from Eulalie Brouwers, junior defender.

The Scarlet Knights attempted a comeback with just under nine minutes left on the clock, as Niklaus earned her second goal of the game. Rutgers fell short on their comeback attempt as the Monmouth defense held strong. The Hawks came back to the nest with another victory in the win column.

Going into Sunday’s game, the Scarlet Knights were ranked No. 17 and the Hawks were just behind at No. 18. Not only did this game snap a six game losing streak against Rutgers that lasted over a decade but also served as the program’s third victory over a Big Ten team.
