Luxury vs. dupe: Where should your money go?

For the longest time, we’ve been told that if we want flawless skin and a full glam face, we must spend a significant amount of money. But is that actually true? If you’ve ever walked into a Sephora, picked up a product, checked the price, and immediately put it back… You are NOT alone. Makeup is expensive, and not everyone wants to spend half their paycheck on one routine.

High-end luxury brands have long dominated the beauty industry, but 2026 is ALL about smart spending. Drugstore brands have seriously leveled up, formulas are better than ever, and dupes are taking over.

In this guide, I’m breaking down where your money should actually go and the best affordable swaps to add to your routine. Here are just a few that perform just as well as the high-end names without the high-end price tag.

  1. NARS Sheer Glow Foundation vs. L’Oreal Infallible
To start us off, let’s talk foundation. The L’Oreal Infallible Foundation ($19) is a seriously good dupe for the NARS Sheer Glow foundation ($50). Both give you that smooth, natural, skin-like finish, but the only difference is that one costs nearly $30 less. L’Oreal leaves your skin feeling hydrated, lightweight, and smooth, with up to 32-hour wear. It gives that polished, put-together look without feeling heavy or cakey. Both formulas also include friendly ingredients such as Vitamin C (NARS) and Vitamin E (L’Oreal), meaning you are still getting hydration and a breathable finish either way. The glow is there, the coverage is there, and your bank account will definitely thank you.
  2. Milk Makeup’s Hydro Grip Gripping Primer vs. Maybelline Grippy Serum Primer
Now we prime and Maybelline’s Grippy Serum Primer ($13) is just as sticky and hydrating as the famous Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Primer ($30), but for less than half the price. And let’s be honest, if it grips the same, why should you have to pay double? Maybelline’s primer feels almost like skincare when applying, especially with its dropper applicator. It has that serum texture that sinks in while still leaving behind the perfect tacky finish, which is exactly what you want before foundation. Your makeup grips onto it, blends smoothly on top, and stays put for up to 24 hours. It gives hydration while still doing its job as a gripping primer, which makes it feel lightweight and fresh rather than heavy. If you love the hold of Hydro Grip but not the $30 price tag, this is the swap you need in your routine.
  3. Clinique Almost Lipstick “Black Honey” vs. e.l.f. Glow Reviver Slipstick “Jam Packed”
Once again, e.l.f., the unofficial masters of dupes, have done it again. Their latest release, the Glow Reviver Slipstick in “Jam Packed” ($10), is practically identical to Clinique’s Almost Lipstick in “Black Honey” ($25) but without the $25 commitment. “Black Honey” has been iconic for years because of its sheer, glossy tint that looks good on everyone and is that effortless, your-lips-but-better shade. But e.l.f.’s “Jam Packed” delivers nearly the same for less than half the price. If anything, “Jam Packed” is just a touch more pigmented, which I personally love because you get a little more color while still keeping that sheer, glossy finish. Both leave your lips looking hydrated and natural, but if you’re choosing based on performance and price, this swap is a no-brainer.
  4. Juvia’s Place Blushed Duo in Vol 14 vs. Dior Backstage Rosy Glow Blush in Pink
For our final swap, we have Juvia’s Place Blushed Duo in Vol 14 ($12) going head-to-head with the infamous Dior Backstage Rosy Glow in “001 Pink” ($42). And I have to say, this one might be my personal favorite. Blush is key to the perfect makeup look as it brings life back into your face, pulls everything together, and gives that healthy, effortless glow. Dior Rosy Glow is known for its soft pink shade and smooth, almost airbrushed finish, and its beautiful, no doubt. But Juvia’s Place delivers just as much pigment, blendability, and glow for nearly $30 less. The color is stunning, it melts into your skin, and it lasts all day without fading. You do not need to spend $42 on a blush to look expensive and or get that perfect pink. A good blush is about how it blends, how it complements your skin tone, and how confident it makes you feel. And this $12 option absolutely does just that!
At the end of the day, makeup should be about creativity, confidence, and self-expression. The stress of the price tag shouldn’t affect this. Luxury brands will always have their moment, but great glam isn’t defined by the brands. It’s defined by how it performs on your skin and how it makes you feel when you look in the mirror. If a $12 blush gives you the same glow as a $42 one, it’s not “settling”, it’s shopping smart.

2026 is the year of intentional beauty. It’s about knowing where to splurge, where to save, and realizing that a flawless makeup routine is possible without draining your bank account. Not to mention, wearing makeup with an added side of confidence is absolutely free.
