Give hockey a chance; you may be surprised

If you don’t know me, I’m an avid sports fan, especially when it comes to hockey. Since this is my final piece, it felt only right to write about the sport I care about most. Asking me to pick a favorite sport is like asking me to pick a favorite child, I say there isn’t one but there secretly is, but if we’re talking about playoff seasons alone, hockey stands in a league of its own. That’s not to say baseball lacks drama or that the Super Bowl isn’t a spectacle. It’s just that the energy of the National Hockey League’s Stanley Cup Playoffs is unmatched.

From what I’ve seen, hockey still doesn’t get the same level of attention as other major sports, which is a shame considering what people are missing. The chaos alone sets it apart, especially in the playoffs. Upsets aren’t rare; they’re expected. Top seeds fall, wild cards surge, and momentum can flip in an instant. As someone whose team had just a 3.8% chance of making the playoffs and is now battling through the first round, I can say firsthand that unpredictability is part of the appeal. In the NHL, rankings don’t guarantee anything.

Then there’s the physicality. Hockey is already intense, but the playoffs take it to another level. Hits are harder, scrums last longer, and referees tend to let teams play through more contact. Every shift feels heavier, every mistake more costly. It’s not just a continuation of the regular season, it feels like a different sport entirely.

Like baseball, hockey uses a best-of-seven series format, which ensures that teams truly earn their place. You don’t luck your way into lifting the Stanley Cup, you have to win four games against the same opponent.

But more than anything, it’s the atmosphere that defines the Stanley Cup Playoffs. I can’t speak for every city, but in Philadelphia, playoff hockey is something else entirely. While this could be because we savor it more due to its recent absence, I definitely believe other cities would agree on this too. And at the center of it all is the Stanley Cup itself, a trophy unlike any other. It carries years of history, and the idea that players have their engraved into it forever adds a level of meaning you just don’t see in any other sport.

So if you’ve never given hockey a real chance, now is the time. Tune in, pick a team, and let yourself get surrounded by the enjoyable chaos, because once you experience the Stanley Cup Playoffs, it’s hard to go back to anything else.
