The Monmouth field hockey team earned two non-conference wins against Temple on Friday, Sept. 11 and Wagner on Sunday, Sep. 13.
Two Monmouth players earned weekly CAA accolades for their performances, with junior Milla Frye winning CAA Offensive Player of the Week and freshman Maja Schröder earning CAA Rookie of the Week honors.
The Hawks started their first of two games on the week in Philadelphia against Temple. Monmouth controlled the game in the first quarter, when sophomore Alicia Vanderlyde and Schröder scored goals 25 seconds apart to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
Temple got themselves back in the game in the second quarter, with Riley Gallagher cutting the Monmouth lead to 2-1 three minutes into the frame and Kathryn Gauvin evening the score with 31 seconds left in the first half. The Hawks went into halftime tied with the Owls at two goals apiece.
In the second half, Monmouth retook control of the game and scored a goal apiece in the third and fourth quarters to secure the victory. Vanderlyde scored her second of the game five minutes into the third quarter, and junior Claire Campen scored with one second left in the game to secure a 4-2 victory for the Hawks.
Vanderlyde led the way for Monmouth, scoring two goals. Schröder added an assist along with her goal. Graduate student Luisa Schlueter also added an assist on Vanderlyde’s first goal of the game.
Monmouth outshot Temple 14-7 in the game and, and the Hawks defense only allowed two Temple shots in the second half, outshooting the Owls 8-2 in the final two quarters. Monmouth Goalkeeper Charlie Bowman made three saves on five shots on goal.
The win was the Hawks second in a row versus Temple, as they also beat the Owls 5-2 during the 2025 season.
Following the loss to Monmouth, Temple defeated Rider 5-0 on Sep. 13, a team Monmouth also beat earlier in the season 8-0. The Owls now sit at 3-3 on the year and face Georgetown in their next game on Friday, Sept. 18.
On Sunday, the Hawks extended their win streak to three as they dominated the Wagner Seahawks on So Sweet-A-Cat Field. Monmouth struck early with junior Éabha Curran scoring her first career goal as a Hawk three minutes into the game. That was the only goal of the first quarter, but the Hawks offense came to life in the second quarter with Frye starting things off with her first goal of the game three minutes into the frame. Junior Stella Goddard-Despot extended the lead to 3-0, and Frye scored her second to cap off a four-goal half for the Hawks.
The Hawks added an additional four goals in the second half, as Wagner had no answer for the Monmouth offense. Vanderlyde scored her first goal of the game and third of the week in the third quarter, and in the fourth Frye added two more goals and junior Abigail Travers added a goal of her own to cap off a commanding 8-0 win for Monmouth.
Frye finished the game with four goals and an assist for five points. Curran had a goal and an assist for two points. Goddard-Despot, Vanderlyde, and Travers each had a goal apiece, and freshman Addison Potvilaitis earned her first career collegiate point with an assist on Frye’s fourth goal.
The Hawks tripled the Seahawks in shots, outshooting them 21-7. Bowman made four saves after only playing the first half, and sophomore Djoeke van Helsdingen made one save while playing the second half.
With the loss, Wagner’s difficult start to the season continued as they fell to 0-6. They travel to Mercyhurst on Friday looking for their first win of the season.
As for Monmouth, they currently sit at 4-1 and are ranked No. 19 in the country according to the NFHCA Coaches Poll. They will host Towson on Friday in their CAA opener before welcoming power conference opponent Penn State to West Long Branch on Sunday.
