Dear Monmouth University Students,
Hey Hawks!
Welcome back to another school year at Monmouth. For many of you, this may be your first year here, and for others, you may be coming back to a place that already feels like home. Either way, I hope everyone is settling in and getting excited for the year ahead.
My name is Ava McGinty, and I am currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Outlook.
The Outlook has been a part of Monmouth since 1933, and I am so excited to be leading the paper this year. If you have never heard of us before, we are Monmouth’s student newspaper. We cover what is happening around campus through our seven sections including news, features, sports, lifestyles, politics, opinions, and entertainment.
But to me, The Outlook has always been more than just a newspaper.
When I first got involved with the Outlook, I never expected how much it would become a part of my college experience. I have met some great people through this paper, and I have had opportunities that I never would have gotten anywhere else.
The first story I ever wrote for the paper was covering The Cardboard Show: Beyond the Fold in the DiMattio gallery during my first year here. Despite having no knowledge of art, or how to even properly conduct an interview, I decided to jump in, and I haven’t looked back.
The newsroom has become one of my favorite places on campus, and I hope that we can make it that kind of place for you, too.
You do not have to be a communication major to write for the Outlook. You do not even have to be an experienced writer (I know I wasn’t). If you have something you want to say or a story you think students should know about, we want to hear it.
Maybe you have always wanted to try writing for a newspaper, or maybe you just want to get more involved on campus. Either way, I would love for you to give us a chance.
College goes by a lot faster than you think, and I know how easy it is to get caught up in classes and everything else going on. But some of the best parts of college come from the things you decide to get involved in. I am so grateful that I found the Outlook, and I hope you will find something here at Monmouth that means as much to you (although I am totally biased and think you should get involved at the Outlook).

And if writing is not really your thing, that is okay, too. I hope you will still read the paper and support student journalism. We work hard to bring you stories about your university, and we want you to feel like you are a part of it.
You chose Monmouth, so get involved and make the most of your time here. You never know what you might find.
