MU Swimming Returns to the Steadman Natatorium

MU SwimmingOn March 30 and 31, the men and women’s swim team hosted the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Spring Invitational home at the Steadman Natatorium. This was the team’s first competition since last year in February 2020.

Due to COVID-19 safety and capacity restrictions, Manhattan College was the only visiting team in the natatorium. After the two-day meet, other teams from the MAAC who competed at their facilities combined their results to virtually score the meet.

Field Hockey Begins Campaign Undefeated

Field HockeyMonmouth field hockey quite literally shutout the competition this past week with a perfect 3-0 record, outscoring their opponents by a score of 6-0 in three games.

Junior goalkeeper Kate O’Hogan was the leader of the Hawks, earning America East Defensive Player of the Week after recording three shutout victories in net.

This was O’Hogan’s third Defensive Player of the Week honor of her career after recording four total saves against America East competition.

Men’s and Women’s Golf is in Full Swing

Mens and Womens Golf 1Men’s golf competed at the Battle at Rum Pointe in Ocean City, Maryland while the women’s team competed in the second Monmouth Spring at the Jumping Brook Country Club.

The men‘s outing at Rum Pointe lasted two days. The highlight for them came on the second day when they posted the lowest score in the field on Sunday with a 295.

It was a historic day for the men’s team, as this was the first time that they broke 300 since playing at Bucknell in October of 2019. The Hawks were able to finish in a tie for fifth place at the event.

Monmouth Football Flashes in Return to Kessler

Monmouth Football 1On Mar. 27, in West Long Branch, the Monmouth University football team (1-0) defeated Charleston Southern (0-2) 35-17 in their 2021 spring season opener at Kessler Stadium.

Every position seemed to dominate on Saturday. Junior running back, Juwon Farri, ran for 119 yards on a career-high 33 carries and three touchdowns.

As for freshman quarterback, Tony Muskett, he made quite the impact throwing for 297 yards on 18-of-26 passing and two touchdowns. Head Coach Kevin Callahan was very impressed with how Muskett managed the game, the way he got the team into the proper plays, as well as changing the plays.

Cross Country Finshes Up, Track Season Begins

Cross Country  FinishesThe Cross-Country team recently finished up their brief season at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships (MAAC) on March 5 at Seaview Golf Club in Galloway. Both the men and women broke expectations, earning some of the lowest scores ever as a team in Monmouth history.

The men placed second as a team with 77 points, marking the first time as a team they got second in the MAAC conference. The women also had an outstanding performance, earning fourth place with a new school team record low of 83 points.

Monmouth Softball Begins the Season 3-1

Monmouth SoftballSoftball won three out of four games this past weekend against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) rival Canisius, starting the season with an impressive 3-1 record.

They played two double headers on Saturday and Sunday. In their first game since March 2020, Monmouth defeated Canisius by a score of 5-4 in nine innings. They followed that with an 11-0 loss in six innings that ended early due to the mercy rule.

Hawks Baseball Springs into Action Winning 3-of-4

Hawks Baseball 1On Saturday, Mar. 20, the Monmouth University baseball team earned a split against Quinnipiac University after a win in the second game with a score of 8-5. Quinnipiac took game one with a score of 5-0.

Monmouth scored very early in game two with a RBI single hit by fifth year student, Johnny Zega. The Bobcats soon retaliated by tying the game in the bottom half. The Hawks then scored three runs in the third with a single turned run in from senior outfielder, Jalen Jenkins. He was then followed by sophomore infielder and rookie of the week, James Harmstead, who slammed his first career home run which was a two-run homer, making the score 4-1.

Men's Lacrosse Wins First Two Games of Season

Men's Lacrosse 1On Saturday, March 6, the Monmouth University men’s lacrosse team began its 2021 season with an 8-5 win against Manhattan at Kessler Stadium.

After the first quarter, Monmouth trailed 1-0 but scored four of the five goals. After taking ahold of the lead, the Hawks—who were sporting their chrome blue helmets, white jerseys, and shorts—never let it go. Manhattan was the first to score in the second half but in response, the Hawks upped the score to 4-1. A Manhattan win was out of sight.

Men's Basketball Eliminated From MAAC 'Tourney'

Men's BasketballMen’s basketball fell to Fairfield in the quarterfinals of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament by a score of 79-60, marking the end of Monmouth’s basketball season. Their record to end the 2020-2021 season was 12-8, and 12-6 in conference play.

“We’ve had a great season; we weren’t picked to win it and we ended up close and tying with Siena,” said Head Coach King Rice. “We hit 10 wins and we held that down for a long time.”

Women's Lacrosse Opens Strong with Record Breakers

Women's Lacrosse 1Women’s lacrosse opened up their 2021 season with a very busy yet strong week of play going 2-1 in a three-game week. Fifth year attack Nicole Ceraso headlined the opening games with 18 total points on 14 shots, seven goals and 11 assists to become the Monmouth program’s all-time points leader.

“After everything that’s transpired over the course of the last year with COVID and so many uncertainties leading up to this point it felt surreal just to be back out there in our uniforms again playing together against real competition,” said Ceraso after her team’s first game. “It was a long time coming to get to this point where we can all be together competing again, but we finally made it.”

MAAC Golf Preseason Rankings Released

MAAC GolfOn February 22, conference officials announced that the Monmouth University men’s and women’s golf teams were selected seventh in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Preseason Poll.

In the ranking, the Monmouth University men’s golf team earned 26 votes. Iona was picked to win the league

The women’s team had five first-place markers and was one of four teams that received a first-place vote.
