Men’s Tennis Cruises for Two MAAC Wins

MT 4 13The men’s tennis team took home two conference wins this past weekend, defeating the Siena Saints, 6-1 on Saturday, Apr. 9 and Fairfield, 7-0 on Sunday, Apr. 10.

Junior Przemyslaw Filipek, freshman Nicola Pipoli, and freshman Alberto Giuffrida all earned wins at singles and doubles in MU’s defeat of Fairfield. With the win, the Hawks are now 4-0 in the MAAC Conference.

Wins by Filipek and Pipoli at No. 2 and junior Christian Vieira and Giuffrida at No. 3 gave the Hawks the doubles point on the day. MU then went on to win five of six singles matches to give them the final score of 6-1 on the day.

In singles, sophomore Gomez Estrada won 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4, while Giuffrida dominated at the No. 6 spot, winning 6-3, 6-1. After a Pipoli, 6-2, 7-5, win at No. 3, Filipek took home the No. 2 match, winning 6-4, 6-3. MU’s sixth point of the day came at No. 1, junior Vidit Veghala taking that match, 7-5, 6-2. Fairfield’s only singles win came at the No. 5 spot, as Fairfield’s Anthony Caputo took the match from Vieira, 7-5, 6-1.

“It was nice to see us get in some tough spots today and compete with poise,” MU head coach Kyle Bailey said. “We talk a lot about focusing on what you can control and I thought the guys did that well today.”

On Saturday, MU won in dominating fashion over the Siena Saints in a contest where the Hawks did not surrender over two games in any set of any match on the day.


The Hawks won the doubles point in 6-0 wins at No’s. 2 and 3, before winning every match in the singles portion of the day.

MU will take to the court next when they face Quinnipiac in Hamden , CT. First serve is set to be hit at 3:00 p.m.


The MU women’s tennis team earned a victory of their own this weekend, as they defeated the Stags 5-2 on Sunday.

Junior Adriana Armendariz, freshman Alexandra Graff and junior Kendal Kauffman all took home wins in both singles and doubles in the win. By beating Fairfield, MU moves to 6-12 on the year and 2-4 in MAAC Conference play.

The Hawks wasted no time in doubles play, as Armendariz and Kauffman got the win at No. 1, 6-2. Following that, Graff and freshman Maria Ivanova clinched the doubles point at No. 2, winning by a score of 6-3. Head coach Patrice Murray credits her team for doing their duties while pairing up.

“Our doubles play was excellent today,” Murray said. “We have been close and finally got the job done.”

Junior Chioma Gabriel cruised to a, 6-1, 6-0, win at No. 3 singles, while Graff also earned a straight-sets victory, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2. Armendariz clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-3, win at No. 1, and Kauffman got the victory in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 10-7, at No. 5.

The Hawks return to action Wednesday, Apr. 13, when they travel to longtime conference foe Quinnipiac. First serve is slated for 3:30 p.m.
