Best Halloween candy

Throughout my many years of trick-or-treating and dressing up on Halloween, the annual trading of candy between my siblings would commence soon after we went up and down the block asking for candy. While we dumped our buckets and sorted every piece, I would be the first one to trade. Typically, I kept my Twix, Kit-Kats, and Hershey bars, I never kept anything sour or gummy like Sour Patch Kids or Mike and Ikes.

Growing up, my mom was a huge chocolate lover. Anything from Mounds, Almond Joys, Kit-Kats, M&M’s, she would get as candy for the trick-or-treaters. Naturally, I would follow in my mom’s footsteps and only keep the chocolate. I believe that any chocolate is the best Halloween candy because of the decadency and the ability to put anything inside.

I believe chocolate is simple, yet packed with flavor. There are also different varieties of chocolate to fit everyone’s needs, like milk, dark, and white. This variety can make sour and gummy candy one note and often encompassing the same flavor. Chocolate is rich, and many companies produce different chocolates to fit everybody’s taste.

I love chocolate-covered candies like Twix and Kit-Kat, which are two of my favorites. The satisfying crunch and bite from a wafer or flavorful biscuit hits the spot as a sweet treat. Many companies now have chocolate that coats another one of their products. For example, the Reese’s Take 5 bar includes a milk chocolate coating with pretzels, caramel, peanut butter, and peanuts on the inside. The versatility with chocolate is unmatched compared to sour and gummy candies.

With gummy candy, the flavors are artificial and may not resemble something real. While there can be a fake chocolate taste, most have the experience eating a classic Hershey bar, and know how that is the standard for chocolate. Something that is fake can be trying too hard to be the gold standard of chocolate. I look for the real taste when I am indulging in a sweet treat, not artificial. To have the most enjoyable trick-or-treating experience and potentially trading candy with friends and family after, I say keep the chocolate and skip the sour and gummy candy.
