On Mar. 15, the 98th annual Academy Awards took place. Before all the rewarded actors get their Oscars, there is a red carpet event where the stars try to look their best. The question is, did they succeed this year? Let’s go through a few looks and give out our own award to the best and worst dressed.
Although I have no fashion degree or anything of the sort, I have some very strong opinions, which means I’m fully qualified to do this! Also, to clarify, this is simply me ranking their red carpet looks, NOT them as a person, actor, etc. Let’s get started with my top five worst-dressed.
Honorable Mention: Keltie Knight
As soon as I see a dress the same color as a yellow highlighter, it’s an immediate no from me. The dress itself wasn’t even designed that poorly, but the color deadened the whole idea to me. Not only is the color just awful, it definitely doesn’t match her color palette. I think she could have done a lot better, as well as do something different with her hair, rather than a basic straight bob.
- Jessie Buckley
This would be a cute dress if it were two different outfits. The top and the bottom have a completely different style, which really surprised me because I usually love the Chanel dresses. Upon further inspection, I guess the style isn’t the main problem, but the colors definitely do not match. I’ll give her a few points because it isn’t the worst thing I’ve ever seen. 5/10 - Timothée Chalamet
The hair? No. The facial hair? No. The sunglasses? No. The rubber boots? No. Other than that, it’s definitely not the worst. The long tie doesn’t really go with the unbuttoned double-breasted suit, and I wish he had gone for a different color other than plain white. Not a win for Givenchy. 5/10 - Law Roach
I honestly think this was just a hit-and-miss. The heeled boots and emerald ring are amazing, but the design on the suit jacket with the picture on one side is not giving what he thought it would. I like the vintage vibe Alexander McQueen was going for, but it could be a lot better. 4/10 - Laura Lufési
To be honest, I just hate this Misci dress. I hate the shape of the neckline, as well as the shape of the bottom. I hate that it looks like there’s extra fabric everywhere. I hate the yellow shoes. I hate the design on the actual dress. 1/10 - Anya Taylor-Joy
Taking the cake for worst dressed would be the only person on the Red Carpet that was not fully dressed. She wore a very tiny John Galliano piece that I just don’t think was appropriate for the Oscars, which is the only reason she beat out Lufési for worst dressed. To make matters worse, she added an awful black bow on her head that makes the whole outfit look like a depressing Christmas present. 1/10
With those looks in mind, let’s go through the best dressed of the night.
Honorable Mention: Elle Fanning
The Fanning sisters never seem to disappoint, and this look was no different. She looked like an adorable princess. The dress is absolutely beautiful. I would’ve put her in a different color to ensure she isn’t being washed out, but the gown is just too amazing not to add to this list. She is just so cute.
- Michael B. Jordan
The best-looking guy from the whole night. Do I have to say more? The Louis Vuitton dark, double-breasted suit was simple, yet charming. The gold details and jewelry pulled the whole look together, and he looked absolutely amazing. As if anyone was surprised. 8/10 - Mckenna Grace
A real-life princess. She wore a Vera Wang Haute pink satin gown that blew everyone away. The inspiration was Gwyneth Paltrow’s 1999 Oscar look, and dare I say she did it better? The pearl necklace and satin shawl really added an extra layer of elegance that she really didn’t need, but made it so much better. 8/10 - Rose Byrne
Definitely one of the best looks of the night. The neckline is my favorite part of the dress, along with the subtle flower design on plain black fabric. This slick back isn’t always my favorite hairstyle choice for red carpets; however, I think that, along with the red lip, it drew more attention to the Dior dress. 8.5/10 - Marsai Martin
Amazing. The dress itself is so beautiful with the sweetheart neckline, the long train, the color, I love it. Her hair and makeup added a great touch, matching the dress completely. However, I do think the necklace somewhat resembles a dog collar. Besides that, no notes; she looked beautiful. 9/10 - Chase Infiniti
Easily the best dressed of the entire night. She looked stunning. The color on her is absolutely breathtaking. I love everything about this look, from her hair to the choker to the dress. Unlike Buckley’s dress, I can’t tell whether I like the top or the bottom more. Louis Vuitton chose an absolute winner with this look. 10/10
Whether you agree or disagree with these takes, don’t let that defer you from what’s important: judging rich celebrities’ outfits as if we’ve ever worn anything similar! Until next year red carpet!
