Women’s Soccer earns win and tie in trip south

Monmouth Women’s Soccer left the Carolinas with a 1-0-1 record after conference games against UNC Wilmington on Thursday and the College of Charleston on Sunday.

The Hawks opened their road trip at UNC Wilmington, which entered the game as one of the top teams in the CAA with an unbeaten record of 6-0-4. The Seahawks got the scoring started in the 10th minute, with Kamrey Watkins giving UNC Wilmington a 1-0 lead.

Despite that being the only goal of the first half, the frame was completely dominated by the Seahawks. They outshot Monmouth 12-1, but four saves from goalkeeper Tallulah Miller kept the Hawks alive.

Monmouth came to life in the second half, as a little over three minutes after the frame started, junior Ashley Lavrich scored her sixth goal of the season and tied the game at one. However, the game was only tied for a little under three minutes as Abbey Pierson scored her second goal of the season to give the Seahawks the lead back in the 52nd minute.

The Hawks kept fighting back and, in the 67th minute, junior Maddie DeMaio, who assisted on Lavrich’s goal, scored one of her own to re-tie the game at two. This would be the final goal of the game, as the teams would settle for a 2-2 draw.

After being outshot 12-1 in the first half, Monmouth had a much stronger second half and was only outshot 9-7. Miller came up big for the Hawks once again, making eight saves, the most she’s made in her career in a single game as a Hawk.

On Sunday, Monmouth completed their trip to the Carolinas with a game against Charleston. After playing in a game featuring four goals, this one would feature just one goal in the first half. Monmouth turned the tides from the UNC Wilmington game and dominated Charleston, outshooting them 7-1. However, none of those seven shots found the back of the net.

It wouldn’t take long for the Hawks to finally break through, as in the 52nd minute, sophomore Marie Bogue scored her first goal of the season and second of her career, giving Monmouth a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Evangeline Perdomo assisted on Bogue’s goal. This tally would wind up being the difference in the game, as the Hawks would hold strong and earn a 1-0 victory.
Monmouth outshot Charleston 15-5 in this game, and thus Miller only had to make two saves.

After the weekend road trip, Monmouth now sits at 6-2-3 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play. The win against Charleston was Monmouth’s first conference victory of the season, and they are currently tied for fourth place in the CAA North division with Stony Brook, who they lost to in their conference opener. The Hawks do not play another game until Sunday, where they will host Drexel at Hesse field.
