Monmouth Field Hockey took down the Drexel Dragons in a 3-0 victory to stay undefeated in conference play this past Friday evening.
It was a quiet start for both teams, with the Hawks looking for revenge against the Dragons in a rematch of last year’s CAA Tournament Finals. Drexel had upset Monmouth in that conference final.
The Dragons came out strong, forcing junior goalkeeper Charlie Bowman out of the net to break up a play twice. Despite the aggressive offensive style from Drexel, only one shot was recorded in the first half. It came from Monmouth junior defender and lead scorer in the CAA, Milla Frye. The game remained scoreless heading into halftime.
The momentum shifted in the Hawks favor in the third quarter with their strong offensive pressure, outshooting Drexel 7-1 and earning five corner shot attempts. It was senior defender Anna Moors who put Monmouth ahead. Moors, who had just been named CAA Player of the Week, was assisted by fellow senior defender Audrey Mullen.
Monmouth continued their control of the game through the last 15 minutes. The Hawks continued their scoring in the 54th minute on a penalty stroke off Frye’s stick, this one finding the back of the top left corner of the net. This moved Frye to 11 goals on the season.
Just 40 seconds later, junior forward Claire Campen scored the Hawks third and final goal of the evening unassisted.
Monmouth’s defense controlled the final six minutes, sealing the shutout win over Drexel. 20 Hawks saw the field against the Dragons, but the defensive star was sophomore defender Florence van Doorn. She earned three shots, two on goal, and a defensive save. In the net, Bowman collected herself a save.
The Hawks continued their weekend at home on Sunday against Yale, where they fell to the Bulldogs by a final score of 2-0. They look to come back this Sunday in a top 20 match-up as they take on the No. 19 ranked Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor. The opening draw is scheduled for 11 a.m.
