Eat, meet with team doctors, warm up the arm, lift weights, sign autographs, pitch six innings against some of the best baseball players in the world, shower, attend a team meeting, and finally, go to bed. This is a typical day in the life of Hannibal, New York native, Jake Shortslef. Just one year ago, Jake, “Shorty” to teammates, was playing Division III baseball at Herkimer County College in New York. He is now a starting pitcher for the Hickory Crawdads, the Class A minor league affiliate of the Texas Rangers organization.

MU Surf Refines Competition
Competition. It is a term that follows most, if not all activities. Competition is a way to understand who is the best. The Broncos won the Super Bowl and are regarded as the best team in football. The same can be said for the Golden State Warriors after their championship run last year. However, asking who is the “best” surfer will not offer the same clear-cut answer.
Commuting: The Best Of Both Worlds
With a love large enough to say, “If I could live here, I would,” many of us commuters still choose not to live on campus at Monmouth. My love for Monmouth is completely indescribable; I cannot imagine myself as happy as I am anywhere else. The desire to spend all the time I have at MU makes others question my choice to commute to school.
Summertime & The Living’s (Finally) Easy
Summer is only a few weeks away and even if you don’t have anything planned, it’s better than school work and studying for finals. After classes end it’s great to have a few weeks off to relax, especially after the stress of finals. With more than three months off from school, there’s a lot you can do with your free time.
“I believe that faithfullness to these ideals will help me to live joyously and valiantly.” | Alyssa Tritschler’s Senior Goodbye
“But especially do we thank thee for friends.”
Monmouth University. You have been my home for the past four years, the best four years of my life. You have given me friendship, serenity, sisterhood, love, education, laughter, and so much happiness. From the moment I stepped on to this campus I knew I never wanted to leave. Now that time has come and it’s so hard to say goodbye. Over the years I have formed memories on every corner of this beautiful campus and I can’t help but stop and think about them as I walk towards the fountains, through the tunnel towards the residential side, or glance at Wilson Hall. Attending this school was my dream and to be able to say that I’ve reached it is so bittersweet. From eating Carlos omelets everyday freshmen and sophomore year, to shoving three people into a double room in Redwood 218, to throwing endless pregame parties in The Lawrence House, and getting stung every Thursday night, this is in fact, a goodbye.
We’ve Got No Time For Getting Old | Erin McMullen’s Senior Goodbye
I’ve been waiting to write this goodbye since I started in The Outlook as a freshman, so you’d think that I would have had some idea of how to start this by now. I honestly have no words of wisdom, no great advice, and nothing inspirational to share with anyone bored enough to read through this whole thing.
Living With a 24/7 Bully
Samantha Caramela is constantly bullying herself. Every day and night since she was a little girl, this “24/7 bully” inside Caramela has been telling her that she is selfish, a harm to others, and that she doesn’t deserve love. This bully is making Caramela fear herself consistently, but Caramela is finding a way to defend herself. This bully is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
Graduate Studies Spotlight: History and Anthropology
With a growing demand in the current job market for men and women with skills revolving around history and anthropology, the University’s graduate programs for each of these fields provide students with just the right amount of experience both inside and outside of the classroom to help them get to where they want to be after they earn their degree.
Summer Fun Day Trips
As school is winding down, the only light at the end of the tunnel for students is summer. That six letter word almost seems untouchable when finals, tests and papers take over our days.
Expectation vs. Reality of Being an Adult
Why is it that when we are a kid all we want to do is grow up, but when we grow up all we want to do is be a kid again?
